Example 4: If a greenish-yellow Cl2 solution is added to the water/ hexane combo, the hexane layer will turn greenish-yellow. What happens if you now add Br- to the Cl2/ hexane/ water?

Answer: Since the chlorine is more electronegative, a reaction will occur, and the resulting Cl- will move into the water layer, leaving the hexane layer to be colorless now. The reaction is: Cl2 (pink, in the hexane) + Br- (in the water) → Cl- (in the water now) + Br2 (in the hexane now).
