SAFETY NOTES: Use good chemical safety techniques as usual. Make sure all waste goes into the containers provided and not down the sink. Wear your goggles!
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: You will work with a partner for this lab. Before starting determine the room temperature using the thermometer in the balance room.
| Part 1: Kinetics at Room Temperature | |

Use a clean 250mL Erlinmeyer Flask to combine the reagents for each run (1-5,8) listed in the table in the background section. Use a different graduated cylinder to measure each reagent. The reagents should be added one at a time in the order they are listed from left to right. Be ready to start timing the reaction when you add the final reagent, (NH4)2S2O8 |
![]() |
Stop timing each reaction when the first blue color appears. Record the elapsed time in your notebook |
| Part 2: Kinetics at Elevated Temperature | |

For run 6, collect a hotplate from the front counter. Turn it on and set it to 10 - 15 oC above room temperature. Place a 400 mL beaker with 200 mL of water on the hotplate. |

Put all of the reagents except for the (NH4)2S2O8, in an Erlinmeyer flask and place it in the water bath to equilibrate. Place the (NH4)2S2O8 in a large test tube and place it in the water bath as well. Leave the reagents in the bath until they both stabilize to the temperature of the bath water. Then add them together and record the time as before. |
| Part 2: Kinetics at Lowered Temperature | |

For run 7, collect a plastic tub and ice from the front counter. Add water and salt to make an ice bath. |
![]() |
Place the reagents in the ice bath in the same way you placed them in the hot water bath. Wait for them to equilibrate and combine them and record the reaction time as before. |
