Chemical Structure and Smell?

The purpose should include the topics and techniques covered in the experiment. The procedure section should cite the lab manual and include any changes made to the procedure during lab work. For this experiment the procedure section should also include the steps that you took to determine the identity of the molecules, this should be complete enough so that someone else could read the procedure and redo the experiment and theoretically obtain the same results.

The data section this week should have the following for each molecule a) the unknown number associated with the molecule, b) the name of the molecule, c) the molecular formula of the molecule, d) the observations made during lab of the molecule, e) the Lewis dot structure of the molecule (drawn in ink), f) the molecular shape of the atoms in the molecule, g) the hybridization of each atom in the molecule excluding hydrogen, and h) any functional groups in the molecule. Be sure that all observations match those in your lab notebook and that if you use any outside sources to get information that you cite them.  

There are no calculations or graphs for this experiment.

The conclusion for this experiment should be several paragraphs long and include the following: A discussion of the identity of each of the unknown molecules. This should be supported by your observations and background knowledge. You must support each identity sufficiently to receive full credit. Be sure to include in your discussion the information in your data section such as molecular shape (per atom), hybridization (per atom), function groups and any things else that allows one to make the correct identity of the molecule. BE SURE TO CLEARLY STATE THE IDENTITY OF EACH UNKNOWN. Also include discussion of how smell is related to molecular structure. Lastly include any possible errors in the experiment or identification of the unknowns.

Answer the following Questions:

  1. Explain why molecules with the same molecular formula can have different smells? Hint: Isomers.

  2. Why is smell and structure of molecules important to chemistry?
