- Group Research focuses on integrated design
and optical spectroscopy of nanometer-scale materials with integration
into bio-molecules.
- As part of the Institute of Molecular Biophysics we are designing drug therapies for future biomedical use that combine the technology of nanoscience and the natural machinery of biology to personalize drug therapies to the individaul patient. My program designs nanomaterials to treat genetic disorders. The gene therapeutic uses a non-toxic, colored semiconductor nanomaterial that has DNA and RNA systematically assembled onto its surface in order to control the release and function of drugs at the cellular level. These unique nanomaterials produced at FSU are literally the size of the DNA that form the basic building blocks of life, and are 1000 times smaller than the width of human hair. By systematically controlling drug delivery, onset of drug action, and duration of function, the demonstration of the FSU technology could open new pathways for the use of gene therapeutics in medicine as a means to treat genetic disorders such as heart disease, sickle cell anemia, and cystic fibrosis.
