2015 Edward H. Kraus Research Grant in Crystallograph

Elias Nakouzi, a 3rd year graduate student in the Steinbock group, has received the 2015 Edward H. Kraus Research Grant in Crystallography. This award from the Mineralogical Society of America was established in 1973. Elias is working with Prof. Steinbock on non-classical crystallization pathways of silica-carbonate biomorphs. Biomorphs are fascinating micrometer-scale precipitation structures which include helices and thin sheets. They feature a complex, self-assembled hierarchical order that is reminiscent of long-range order in biominerals. Their primary constituents are witherite nanorods and amorphous silica. The 2013 and 2012 awardees of the Kraus Research Grant were students from Stanford and Northwestern University.
