Introduction
Strong acids and bases are a part of our daily lives even though we seldom think about them. The gastric acid in your stomach is a strong (pH 2-4) hydrochloric acid that hydrolyses the bonds in the carbohydrates and the proteins that make up your food. The drain cleaner that unclogs your sink is made up of concentrated sodium hydroxide which when combined with grease or oils converts the compounds into soap which is then soluble in water and can be washed away. In this experiment we will test the relationship between pH and acid or base concentration. We will also discuss how strong acids and bases react to neutralize each other forming predictable products of salt and water.
