Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion (C or better) of CHM 1045.
Corequisites: General Chemistry II Lab (CHM1046L).
Course Description: Primarily designed for students planning to major in science or science related fields. Topics include states of matter, colligative properties, acid-base theory, electrolytes, oxidation-reduction, chemical equilibrium, solubility product, chemical thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. Lecture 3 hours. Recitation 1 hour.
Required materials: Chemistry, The Science in Context, 3rd Edition, by Thomas R. Gilbert, Rein V. Kirss, Natalie Foster, and Geoffrey Davies, 2012; W.W. Norton & Company, Inc.; ISBN: 978-0-393-93431-1. WebAssign Stand-Alone Gilbert code (available in TCC bookstore); ISBN: 978-1-928-55096-9. Our class key is tcc.fl 0188 2672
Optional materials: Student Solutions Manual, Chemistry: The Science in Context, 3rd Edition; by Karen S. Brewer, 2012; W.W. Norton & Company, Inc.; ISBN: 978-0-393-93454-0.
Calculators: You will need a graphing calculator (such as a TI-83 or TI-84) in this course. Please bring your calculator to every class meeting.
Disclaimer: Although I expect to conduct the course according to this syllabus, I reserve the right to make modifications if circumstances dictate.
Important Dates:
Last day for Student or Administrative Withdrawal Thursday, June 26, 2014
Final Exam 5:30 PM – 7:15 PM, Tuesday, July 22, 2014
Attendance: Your attendance at class meetings is expected; following established College guidelines (see the Tallahassee Community College Catalog). If you wish to voluntarily drop the course, it is your responsibility to complete the necessary forms for withdrawal; otherwise a failing grade may result. If a regular class meeting is missed, it is your responsibility to obtain any assignments or instructions that were given by the instructor. Missing a class is not an excuse for not preparing for the next class meeting or not having any assignments ready on time. Note that the last day to withdraw from this class is Thursday, June 26, 2014.
Conduct: Attentiveness in class pays off on exams. Class participation is expected in this course. Lateness to class disrupts the activities and is never appreciated by either the instructor or your fellow students. It is critical to be on time for a “quiz” or an “exam” day as a late arrival will give you less time to complete the quiz or exam. Please turn off all cell phones and beepers when entering the classroom. Please do not text during class.
Excused/Unexcused Late Work or Absences from Exams: As stated previously, attendance at all class meetings is expected. I do not give makeup quizzes or exams. I will replace your lowest exam score by the final exam grade and I will drop two quizzes. Attendance at the final exam is mandatory unless you have a truly extenuating emergency.
Academic Dishonesty/Cheating: It is your responsibility to know the elements of academic dishonesty, plagiarism, cheating, etc., as set forth in TCC Student Handbook. TCC allows no form of collaboration in the preparation of papers or in the taking of quizzes or exams. Work on homework, quizzes, and exams must be totally your own. You should neither request nor give help. The penalty for violating the TCC Academic Code in this class is a score of zero for the quiz, exam, or paper on which the violation occurs. Additionally, your name will be forwarded to Student Judicial Affairs for additional action.
Methods of Instruction: Class will consist primarily of lectures and working problems. Unless specifically deleted, all portions of the chapters covered will be included on the examinations. Occasionally, students will be asked to present problems to the class on the board. Student participation in question and answer sessions is expected.
Course Overview: The course covers material presented in chapters 10,11,14-17, and 19 of the textbook. If time allows, we will also cover chapter 12.
Required Practices: You are expected to read the appropriate sections of your text and work any problems assigned before coming to class. As you read the chapter, you should work the problems that appear within the chapter. The answers to selected problems are provided in the back of your text and are completely worked out in the Solutions Manual. A copy of the solutions manual is available in the Learning Commons or you may buy a copy from the TCC bookstore. You should work the problems yourself before consulting the solutions manual.
Evaluation: The traditional examination is necessary; however we want to provide an opportunity for all students to demonstrate their knowledge of the material. Many students don’t “test well” and all students have the occasional “bad test day”. To accommodate this philosophy, a point system has been designed which includes examinations, attendance, homework, and quizzes. Just as all students are required to take the exams, all students are expected to complete homework, take the quizzes and attend recitation. All of these activities are designed to facilitate learning in General Chemistry.
Calculation of grade:
Total 700 pts 100%
Grading Scale: Grades in the course will be determined on the basis of the total points in the course. The grading scale for this course is as follows:
A( 90-100 %), B(80-89 %), C(70-79 %), D(60-69 %), F(<60 %)
TCC Blackboard Site: This course is designated as web-assisted, which, at a minimum, means that some materials will be posted to the course TCC Blackboard site. To reach the TCC Blackboard site for this course, you must activate your student e-Account. Once you have done that, you can find the course website as follows:
Email: I will regularly send communications to you via your TCC email address. It is your responsibility to check it regularly. You have the ability to set your TCC email to automatically forward to another email address, if you prefer. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that this feature works correctly.
TCC Learning Commons (located in LC 30, http://www.tcc.fl.edu/learningcommons) provides one-stop convenient access to expanded learning assistance and resources. The Math and Science area offers support in mathematics and science. Students can work independently or in small groups while having access to resources including: trained tutors, specialists and learning assistants, videos, textbooks, calculators, an open-access computer lab and much more. The TCC Learning Commons is open: 7:30 AM – 7:30 PM (M-Th), 7:30 AM – 5 PM (F), & 10 AM – 2 PM (Sat).
Special Accommodations: Students with Disabilities: Tallahassee Community College provides accommodations to eligible students in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA 2008). Reasonable accommodations are available for students with a documented disability. If you have a disability and may need accommodations to fully participate in this class or accurately assess achievement of learning outcomes, please visit the Disability Support Services (DSS) Office. All accommodations MUST be approved through DSS (Student Union, 172). Please stop by or call 850-201-8430 to make an appointment with a counselor.
