Alex Bain - In Memoriam

Alex Bain - In Memoriam

The Canadian and International NMR communities are mourning the passing of Prof. Alex Bain of McMaster University. His extensive work on two-dimensional NMR, exchange phenomena in NMR spectra, Floquet theory, and studies of NMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclides, have all proved invaluable to us. His generosity with students, and with assisting with numerous research projects was also deeply appreciated. He will be sorely missed!

In Celebration of Alexander Bain (June 24, 1948 -  December 28, 2016)

Alex passed away peacefully at home in Toronto on December 28th 2016 of heart failure. Alex was the son of the late Madeleine and James Bain, caring and supportive husband of Janet Rossant and loving father to Robert and Jennifer (deceased). He will be sorely missed by his siblings, James (Megan), Peggy (Arndt) and Peter (Leigh), his nieces, nephews and the extended Armour clan.

Alex studied Math and Physics at the University of Toronto, followed by postgraduate studies at UBC and the University of Cambridge, where he developed his career-long research interest in the theory of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. He taught for many years in the Chemistry Department at McMaster University, where he was a respected colleague and supportive mentor to many aspiring students and junior faculty.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto on Friday January 6th, 2017 from 10 a.m., followed by a Service of Remembrance at 11 a.m.
