SYLLABUS

Ever since Hiroshima, reference to anything nuclear has been met with trepidation or outright fear. Nuclear radioactivity, though not well understood by the general population, is always perceived as a threat.

In this lab, we will look at how radioactivity is measured by use of halfe-lives and discuss how to determine when that radiactivity is actually dangerous. Radioactivity is currently being used in medicine, in science and in the production of electricity, so its uses obviously often outweigh its dangers.

Radioactive waste is one of the most dangerous aspects of the use of nuclear materials. In this lab, we will also investigate one of the processes used to recycle this dangerous waste material. In doing this we will also learn about one of the most common chemistry techniques: Liquid-Liquid Extraction.
