SYLLABUS

Batteries work by the transfer of electrons that occurs when two substances differ in their potentials. The direction of flow depends on the strength of each substances potential. An element or compound with a higher potential will remove electrons (oxidize) an element or compound with a lower potential. In this experiment, you will be building micro-scale unit cells of copper, magnesium and iron. You will then determine their potentials using a device called a voltmeter (multimeter) in order to create a potential series that ranks the potentials of each of the above metals.
