Pluto is the planet farthest away from both the Sun and the farthest planet away from the Earth, and yet we know that the atmosphere of Pluto is almost entirely made up of Methane. How do we know this? Quite simply, we use spectroscopy to determine the visible spectrum of the planet's atmosphere. Every element or compound has a unique spectrophotometric signature that can be used to identify those elements or compounds even at great distances.

In your lab, you will be using a simplified version of a spectrometer to identify some unknown light sources by matching their spectra to some of their known wavelengths.
