SYLLABUS

We learned previously that ions like to dissolve in polar solvents such as water. What we didn't discuss previously, is how those ions affect the water. Water containing ions is called "hard" water. This is because the presence of these ions makes it hard to use soap and other detergents. There are several places around the country where hard water exists and is used in day-to-day life. People in these areas have learned to work with the problems hard water creates by using specially designed soaps and cleaners that dissolve the "scum" that forms when hard water and soap interacts regularly. In this experiment, you are going to test and then "soften" some examples of "hard" water in order to better understand the problems hard water creates.
