Milestone Checklist and Timeline

Year 1: Semester 1
□ Complete Lab Exploration (CHM 5935-02)

    • Submit Form to CBSA identifying four departmental faculty to discuss research (Sept. 30)
    • Submit Form to CBSA identifying a minimum of two departmental faculty labs to carry out lab rotations (Oct. 28)
    • Submit Form to CBSA prioritizing Professor Choice (1 being highest) (November 1)

Year 1: Semester 2
□ Complete Doctoral Supervisory Committee Form – Submit to CBSA by Feb. 1*
□ Complete Student Annual Review – Submit to CBSA by Feb. 1**
□ Complete Teaching Requirement (2 semesters of teaching)
□ Complete English Language Requirement (International Students Only)

    • Either pass the SPEAK Exam with a 50 or pass EAP 4832 with a 90 or higher

Year 2:
□ Complete Research Presentation in Program Seminar (20 minutes) – Full committee required

    • Register for the graded section of programmatic seminar this semester
    • Submit 2nd Year Talk Form to CBSA Office*

□ Complete Student Annual Review – Submit to CBSA Office by Feb. 1**

□ Complete 18 credit hours of graded coursework (June 1)

Year 3:
□ Complete PhD Candidacy Exam (December 15) – Full committee required

    • Written Component: Research Proposal
    • Oral Component:
        • Part A: Defense of research proposal
        • Part B: Defense of fundamental knowledge in Chemistry and Biochemistry
    • Submit Written and Oral Forms to CBSA Office upon completion*

□ Eligible for coursework Master’s Degree (in-flight MS)

    • Apply for graduation online

□ Complete Student Annual Review – Submit to CBSA Office by Feb. 1**

Year 4:
□ Complete Research Presentation in Program Seminar (25-50 minutes) – Full committee required

    • Register for the graded section of programmatic seminar this semester
    • Submit 2nd Year Talk Form to CBSA Office*

□ Complete Student Annual Review – Submit to CBSA Office by Feb. 1**

Year 5:
□ Complete Data Defense – Full committee required

    • If completing degree prior to year 5, Data Defense is not required

□ Complete First Author Publication

    • Must be submitted prior to degree completion

□ Enter Defense Date in the Manuscript Portal

    • All manuscript approvals/signatures are submitted through online portal

□ Complete PhD Defense – Full committee required

    • Submission of written thesis four weeks prior to defense date
    • 25-50 presentation in open seminar
    • Oral defense in closed meeting

□ Request PhD Continuation Status by February 15

    • A student requiring more than spring semester to complete their degree is required to file a continuation form with GAAC for consideration of continuing support in program. Submit request to CBSA Office**
