Spectroscopy Laboratory

The Spectroscopy Lab at FSU is home to a variety of instruments used for optical spectroscopy of solid-state and solution samples. The lab provides facilities for optical characterization via steady-state, using UV-VIS-NIR, FT-IR, Raman, fluorescence, and emission quantum yield measurements. Time-resolved absorbance and emission spectra/kinetics can be acquired from 250 fs to 1 ms time scales. The facility can be accessed by internal or external researchers after undergoing training or via sample submission (contact Dr. Winfred). Collaborative projects are welcome.

Edinburgh ns-Transient Absorption Spectrometer

Description:

The Edinburgh Instruments LP980-KS Laser Flash Photolysis Spectrometer can measure laser-induced transient absorption and emission kinetics and spectra using either a kinetic detector (photomultiplier tube for the UV/VIS, InGaAs detector for the NIR) or a gated intensified CCD detector using time gates as short as 10 ns. The pump laser is a Nd:YAG laser (10 Hz rep rate) operating at 355 nm (third harmonic) to pump an Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO). The system is normally operated at 1 Hz. The probe is a 150 W pulsed Xenon arc lamp for kinetic and spectral measurements from multi-ns up to 300 µs. A 50 W Tungsten Halogen lamp is used for longer time scales. Most spectrometer and laser functions are computer controlled.

Specifications:

  • Pump Wavelength: 200 nm to 2000 nm, pulse energy is wavelength dependent
  • Probe Sources: 150 W Xenon lamp, CW and pulsed (230-900 nm); 50 W tungsten halogen lamp (>300 nm)
